How to bathe a Sphynx or any hairless cat

So you've got a Sphynx cat and you're wondering how to keep their skin clean and healthy? You've come to the right place! Bathing a Sphynx cat is a bit different from bathing a regular cat because, well, they don't have any hair. Instead, they need skincare to keep their skin in top condition. In this blog post, we'll guide you through the process of bathing your Sphynx cat and share some tips to make it a positive experience for both of you.

Why do Sphynx cats need baths?

Sphynx cats have a unique skin type that requires regular cleaning. Without hair to absorb oils, their skin can become oily and prone to acne. Bathing helps to remove excess oil, dirt, and dead skin cells, keeping their skin clean and preventing any skin issues.

How often should you bathe them?

This is the million dollar question, and a subject of great debate in the hairless cat community.  Every cat, every owner, every diet, and every home environment is different and can have a big impact on their skin health.  Therefore, there is no right answer to this questions.  Some owners bathe their cats weekly others only once every few month, some even say they never need to bath their hairless cat.  The majority of hairless cat owners we talk to seem to be in the 2-3 week range, but ultimately you know your pet best and will figure this out through a little trial and error.

Choosing the right skin cleanser

When it comes to bathing your Sphynx cat, it's important to use a skin cleanser specifically designed for hairless cats. Avoid using regular shampoos as they can be too harsh for their sensitive skin. Look for a gentle, natural cleanser that is free from harsh chemicals and fragrances and pH balanced for a cat's natural skin pH6. (read our blog on pH balancing in hairless pet products)

Preparing for the bath

Before you start bathing your Sphynx cat, gather all the necessary supplies. You'll need the basics:

  • a tub, basin or sink, with warm water
  • the skin cleanser
  • a soft washcloth or sponge
  • some towels

We are particularly fond of exfoliating gloves because they help remove dirt, oils and dead skin. Make sure the water is lukewarm, as hot water can be uncomfortable for your cat.

Beyond the basic experiment with some of these options:

  • use an instant read thermometer to get the temperature just right
  • try different tub and sink sizes, you might find that bathing them in a larger tub is calming because it gives them room to roam and relax
  • have some toys and treats nearby to help distract them, we love using a licking mat with suction cups that sticks to the side of the tub
  • use warm wet cloths at the bottom of the tub for stability and for over their bodies for calming

The bathing process

Start by wetting your Sphynx cat's body with warm water. Be gentle and make sure to avoid getting water in their ears and eyes. Once their body is wet, apply a small amount of the skin cleanser to the washcloth or exfoliating gloves and gently massage it into their skin. Pay extra attention to areas that tend to get oily, such as the face, neck, and tail.

Rinse off the cleanser thoroughly, making sure there is no residue left on their skin. You can use a handheld showerhead if your cat is comfortable with it, otherwise simply use your hands or sponge to rinse . Take your time and be patient throughout the process.

Drying and post-bath care

After the bath, gently pat your Sphynx cat's skin dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing, as it can irritate their skin.

After the bath, it's a good idea to apply a moisturizer, skin conditioner, or elixir specifically formulated for hairless cats. This will help lock in the moisture from the bath to keep their skin hydrated and prevent dryness.  Here again, make sure your product is pH balanced for cats because as a leave on product you want to make sure it is supportive of a healthy natural skin microbiome.

Bathing a Sphynx cat may seem like a daunting task at first, but with the right approach and the proper skincare products, it can become a regular part of your cat's grooming routine. Remember to be patient, gentle, and always prioritize your cat's comfort.
